Runnels Proves Strong Contender at Mu Alpha Theta State Meet

Congratulations to the Runnels Mu Alpha Theta chapter for taking second place in Quality Points at this year’s state convention held April 11-13 at the Crown Plaza in Baton Rouge. More than 750 students from 35 different schools competed in the annual event.
“The Quality Points awards,” said Mu Alpha Theta co-sponsor Norma Marsh, “are given to the schools with the highest average scores for the ratio of students attending.” Runnels, with a 13-member team, was often up against schools with as many as 60 delegates.
“Although we were hugely outnumbered,” she noted, “our students were among the highest calibre at the convention. They performed beyond expectations, bringing home the big prize and a number of trophies and ribbons for especially high performance.”
Our four-person Alpha (pre-calculus) Team of Evan Beoubay, Carson Badinger, Marshall Pentes and Connor Porthouse won 8th place in the Interschool Test!
Carson Badinger won 1st place in Alpha Advanced Math, and Evan Beoubay, 18th. Connor Porthouse placed 3rd in Alpha Trigonometry, and Eric Ho came in 8th. Natalia Tooraen won 3rd place honors in Mu Differential Equations, and her sister Emma Tooraen finished 11th in Mu B Calculus.
Connor Porthouse placed 2nd in the Alpha (pre-calculus) individual test, and Marshall Pentes finished 20th. Since all participants are required to take individual tests according to their current math class, students can find themselves competing with 200 students, depending on the test.
In games and team events, the Runnels Hustle Team of Daniel Mayeaux, Marshall Pentes, Reagan Kyle and Joseph Ismail won 4th place.  In Ciphering, Evan Beoubay, Carson Badinger and Connor Porthouse placed 9th. Our Gemini/Mu A (calculus AB) Team composed of Alex Morgan and Natalia Tooraen finished 10th.
Also participating in the convention were Reagan Kyle, Jenna Carballo, Kayla Evans, Madison Sutton.  Jillian Edmonson attended as a volunteer.
A very special thank you is extended to alumna (‘16) Anna Morgan for co-sponsoring Mu Alpha Theta at Runnels. Anna worked with students on a weekly basis preparing game questions, working with the officers, and quarterbacking general meetings. At the convention, she and Mrs. Marsh helped proctor exams, run and score games, and chaperone events.
