Runnels Powerlifters Claim Multiple Medals at State Meet
The Raiders and Lady Raiders made a great showing at the LA State Championship Powerlifting Meet March 15-16 in Alexandria, earning one title and six medals, with 14 lifters competing.
Junior Julia Sager claimed the Louisiana State Champion title in the girls 123-lbs. weight class with a first-place finish. Earning third place to bring home bronze in the same weight category was sophomore Mia Alfonso. Also picking up a third-place medal in the 114-lbs. weight class was eighth grader Meredith Taliaferro.
Other strong finishers were senior Micah Roper and her sister, freshman Ryan Roper, who placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 105-lbs. weight class, and sophomore Emma Schlotterer and junior Erin Oehrle, who finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 132-lbs. weight class. Overall, the Lady Raiders placed fifth in a field of 21 teams.
For the Raiders, senior Seth Chiasson earned a silver medal with his second-place finish in the 148-lbs. weight class. Bringing home third place medals were senior Justin Taliaferro in the 198-lbs. weight class and junior Hudson Hillman in the 123-lbs. weight class.
Placing fifth were seniors Aaron Taliaferro in the 165-lbs. weight class and Spencer Spivak in the 132-lbs. weight class. Eighth grader Eli Latiolais finished sixth in the 220-lbs. weight class, while senior Caleb Reid placed eighth in the 198-lbs. weight class. The boys team finished seventh out of 22 teams this year.
“Congratulations to all the lifters on a great effort over the two-day meet,” said Head Coach Mitch Reeves. “Thanks to the administration, the incredible coaching staff, and marvelous parents that supported us all year!”
Assisting Coach Reeves in directing the team were coaches Tom Babcock, Greg Taliaferro, Lonnie Leger, and Mike Day.
