Runnels Senior Awarded Mu Alpha Theta Scholarship


Alex Matthews, a senior at Runnels High School, is the recipient of a $4,000 Mu Alpha Theta Scholarship. The award is presented to outstanding math students who have been actively involved in Mu Alpha Theta competitions and projects. Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society.
A member of Mu Alpha Theta since 8th grade, Alex has participated in four state conventions and two national conventions. As a sophomore, he was elected recording secretary of the Mu Alpha Theta state board and has served in that capacity for the past two years. Currently, he is president of the Runnels chapter of the organization. 
A National Merit Finalist, Alex plans to use the Mu Alpha Theta scholarship to study mechanical engineering in the fall as a freshman at Texas Christian University, where he has also been awarded a National Merit Scholarship, a Dean’s Scholarship, and a TCU Grant.   
Alex is the son of Kenneth and Karen Matthews.
