Six Runnels Athletes Sign with College Teams
Six Runnels seniors have been recruited by college teams and were recognized at a signing ceremony in the school gym on May 2. The signees are soccer players Lainee Alfonso, Ally Garrity and Max Sager, baseball player Colin Bonine, track and cross country runner Sam Matthews, and swimmer Jordyn Miller.
Soccer player Lainee Alfonso signed with the Lady Crusaders of William Carey University, an NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and Southern Athletic Association school located in Hattiesburg, MS. She was recruited as a defensive player and will attend on a soccer scholarship.
Ally Garrity signed as a defender for the soccer team at the University of West Alabama, where she has been awarded an athletic scholarship, the Trustee Leadership Scholarship, and the Superior Student Scholarship. West Alabama is an NCAA Division II school in the Gulf South Conference.
Max Sager is headed to Birmingham-Southern College, an NCAA Division III school in the Southern Athletic Association Conference, where he was recruited as an outside back on the men’s soccer team. He will attend on an academic scholarship.
Colin Bonine made a commitment to pitch for the Dolphins at Delgado Community College in New Orleans as a freshman in the fall, where he has been awarded a baseball scholarship. Delgado is an NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) school.
Sam Matthews is set to run track for Texas Christian University, a Big 12 Conference school, where he will be an invited walk-on athlete. He will attend TCU on a National Merit Scholarship.
Swimmer Jordyn Miller, who recently beat her own record by completing the 100 butterfly in under one minute, signed with Birmingham-Southern College. An accomplished harpist, she will attend on a Fine and Performing Arts Scholarship and a Greensboro academic scholarship.
