Runnels Powerlifter Earns Gold at Regional Meet


Reigning state powerlifting champion Runnels senior Sam Day brought home gold by winning 1st place in the Super Heavy Weight Class at the East Regional Powerlifting Meet held at Woodlawn High School on Feb. 24. In addition, he was the named the “Best Lifter” of the competition. 
Also winning medals for Runnels were junior Aaron Taliaferro, who took 3rd place honors in the 165-pound weight class, sophomore Julia Sager, the 2nd place finisher in the 123-pound weight class, and Lady Raider Ryan Roper, who came in 3rd in the 97-pound weight class.
For the boys’ team, Justin Taliaferro finished 4th in the 188-pound weight class, senior Justin Reeves tied for 6th in the 275-pound weight class, and junior Seth Chiasson finished in the top 10 in the 148-pound weight class. Juniors Steven Spivak and Ian Lansing, freshman Caleb Reid and 7th grader Eli Latiolais posted new personal records in several lifts. 
The entire girls’ team finished in the top 10. Earning 4th place were junior Micah Roper in the 105-pound weight class and 7th grader Meredith Taliaferro in the 114-pound weight class. Capturing 5th place were seniors Natalie Justus in the 123-pound weight class, Ashley Stansbury in the 132-pound weight class, and Catherine Henning in the 148-pound weight class. Freshman competitor Emma Schlotterer earned 6th place in the 114-pound weight class.
Qualifying to test their strength at the upcoming State Meet were lifters Catherine Henning, Natalie Justus, Ryan Roper, Micah Roper, Meredith Taliaferro, Julia Sager, Emma Schlotterer, Ashley Stansbury, Sam Day, Seth Chiasson, Justin Reeves, Caleb Reid, Aaron Taliaferro, and Justin Taliaferro. The Louisiana State Powerlifting Championship Tournament will be held on March 15 in Alexandra.
Directing the Runnels team are head coach Mitch Reeves and assistant coach Tom Babcock. Assisting them are Greg Taliaferro and Michael Day.
