Preschool Teachers Attend Summer Conference
The Runnels preschool faculty and staff got a head start on the school year by heading to New Orleans July 25 to participate in Childhood Education Workshop (CEW) 2017 sponsored by the Children’s Ministry Office of Louisiana Baptists.
The full day professional development conference held at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary provided an opportunity for teachers to stay on top of important innovations in preschool education and expand their expertise in the classroom.
Teachers attended workshop sessions on the topics of teaching science, math and art, modeling desired behaviors for preschoolers as a teaching style, helping students learn self-regulation, the value of rest at preschool, the creative process in arts education, and activities for helping students develop gross and fine motor skills.
“We like to attend conferences to get our staff excited and inspired for the new school year,” said Preschool Co-Director Karen Runnels. “It’s a chance to hear fresh ideas, discover new things to try in our classrooms, become more familiar with current trends in early childhood education, and keep growing and developing as teachers of young children.”
Karen Runnels also pointed out that conferences provide a relaxed atmosphere for teachers to visit and get to know one another.
Funds to cover the cost of the conference were raised by selling funnel cakes at Raider Rally. "Our staff and some parents and volunteers helped make the dough and fry the cakes," said Karen Runnels.
Attending the conference were Shasta Felton, Laura Russell, Laurin Fairley, Amy Sandifer, Preschool Co-Director Janice Leger, Michael Bordelon, Rebecca Todaro, Anne Brown, Karen Runnels, Nikki Guidry, Sarah Sheikha, Chemaine Butner, Connie Torres and Dawn Pittman.
The faculty wrapped up the day with dinner at Marcello’s Restaurant on St. Charles Avenue, which was arranged by Mrs. Todaro.
