Hearing & Vision Screening

Hearing and Vision screenings are performed each fall. Vision screening is done for grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Hearing screening covers grades K, 1, 3, 7, and 10. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer with administering these screenings. The criteria used for evaluation can be found below:

Vision Screening

Students are screened for visual acuity, both near and far, and muscle balance/depth perception. Younger children are screened for color perception. Runnels School uses the Titmus vision screener, which uses age appropriate slides for testing. Students are referred if he or she does not meet the following criteria cited by the National Association of School Nurses.

Kindergarten or younger are referred for:

  • 20/50 in either eye or a two-line difference between the right and left eyes for the acuity test.
  • failure of the muscle balance/depth perception test.

Grades 1 - 12 are referred for:

  • 20/40 in either eye or a two-line difference between the right and left eyes for the acuity test.
  • failure of the muscle balance/depth perception test.

Hearing Screening

Students are screened according to the guidelines set forth by the State of Lousisiana Department of Public Health. An audiometer is used for testing. A student is referred if any of the six testing tones are not heard. If the student does not pass, the test is repeated in two weeks to confirm results and then a referral is made if necessary.
