Jr./Sr. High Curriculum

More than 140 classes are available at the high school level, all of which meet the Louisiana State Board of Regents Standards. Junior high students have approximately 40 classes from which to choose, including many honors courses. The transition between junior high and high school at Runnels is usually accomplished smoothly. Junior and senior high classes meet for 50 minutes five times per week, and students have the option of taking up to 8 classes in a school day. Our emphasis is on personal integrity and responsibility of our students, rather than on a multitude of detailed regulations covering every aspect of student life.

Our students receive a strong foundation in the core subject areas of English, History, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages. Students can also choose from a wide range of honors and AP courses.

Runnels has outstanding programs in the visual and performing arts. Our teachers are trained professionals, excited about sharing their talents and guiding students to find expression in the arts. Our beautiful performing arts classrooms and a 500-seat theatre support our arts programs and provide opportunities for students to share their talents and express their creativity. Students choosing to study a musical instrument have lessons every school day of the year.

Strong AP Program

We encourage students to maximize their learning by taking advantage of our expansive Advanced Placement (AP) program. Runnels provides 20 different AP courses, giving us the distinction of offering one of the most comprehensive AP curriculum in the city. Traditionally, Runnels has been well represented in the AP Scholar program. Last year, 31 Runnels students were named AP Scholars, with four earning the National AP Scholar award, the highest available in the AP Program. This year one of the two AP State Scholar was a 2016 Runnels graduate.

“I think Runnels has one of the best AP programs around.  We offer small class sizes so teachers have more one-on-one time to teach skills, many teachers have advanced degrees in their subject areas, and all teach with approved AP audits.”
